What Are The Benefits Of Getting Energy Efficient Refrigerators?

The 20 year old refrigerator that's currently in your kitchen may have vintage appeal, but sentiment should not stop you from retiring it and upgrading to a more efficient appliance. If you own a fridge that was made before 1933 it could be costing you upwards of $100 every year to operate. Replacing your vintage appliances with energy efficient refrigerators could cut your energy costs almost in half. In addition to saving you money each year, many of these refrigerators come with innovative features such as precise temperature controls and advanced food compartments that will keep your food fresher for longer.

Thanks to the recent improvements in insulation and compression technology, the refrigerators of today use far less energy than the older models, and when you purchase a fridge that's energy star certified, you will be maximizing your energy savings as well as your money savings without needing to sacrifice those features that you really want. This is simply because all energy star refrigerators are required by the U.S. Department of Energy to use 20% less energy than those that are not energy star rated.

The good news about energy efficient appliances is that you can find them at almost every home improvement store in a variety of designs including French Door, Side by Side and Bottom Mount Freezer. If you decide to purchase a GE energy star qualified fridge for your home, you will be making an investment in efficiency, performance, style and convenience that comes with such innovations as improved drawer designs and better temperature controls.

The best benefit that comes from owning an energy efficient fridge is the tax credit that comes along with it. The United States government has approved a credit for any homeowner that purchases energy efficient appliances for their household. And it's not just relegated to refrigerators either, the tax credit applies to solar panels, windows and even washing machines. So if you find that you're paying more than you should on your energy bills month after month, perhaps its time to make your appliances work for you. Do some research before you decide to buy so you can find a fridge that will work best for you and your family.

And you can really get a nice chunk of change back from the IRS if you buy one of those top of the line, double door refrigerator monster boxes. It's a tax credit that you get when you do your tax returns. So make sure your preparer takes advantage of this for you.

You are right about that. That is exactly why you can no longer get Freon to charge your cars' air conditioner. Actually I think the only reason they changed was because DuPont was losing their patent on Freon so they just changed the rules to a whole new ballgame. That was back in the early 1990's if I remember correctly.

I think the new efficient refrigerators also use a different kind of compressor and thus a different kind of refrigerant than the old one used to. I think it had to do with some type of Freon killing the ozone or something like that.

I have a friend that upgraded to a new refrigerator and he kept the old one because it still worked. He is pretty handy with power tools and such and he converted into a cooler that holds one of those large beer kegs. He installed it in his basement "clubhouse".

Sure, any metal scrap yard would take your old fridge and pay you money per pound of metal present in it. The trouble here though is that there is not much metal in a fridge so you would not make very much.

I was wondering if you could take your old fridge to the scrap yard and get any money for it. It would sure beat taking it to a landfill and paying money to have them bury it in the Earth.

You are correct: the energy star certified fridge will save you considerable money over an old one, like one from the 80's or something like that. New technology really rocks!
